Guinate and the Mirador de Guinate

Image
Have you ever been to the “greener” side of Lanzarote? Do you enjoy witnessing breathtaking views of a one-of-a-kind panoramic place? Well, my friend, I invite you to check out the small town of Guinate. This beautiful and quaint town is situated at around 500 meters of altitude (above sea level) on the great cliffs of El Risco de Famara. On the north side of the island of Lanzarote. Descending south along the road parallel to the Riscos de Famara, and to the right, you reach Guinate, a town that shares a past like Ye's. At the end of the main street, the visitor comes across the Mirador de Guinate (Guinate Viewpoint, described down below) on the edge of the Famara cliff and overlooking the Chinijo Archipelago. The departure from Guinate to Máguez is under the Los Helechos volcano, which is a three-thousand-year-old volcano, like the volcano of La Corona. This entire place is fantastic for hiking, there are several trails that lead to unique viewpoints. You can see the entire beach

Playa del Risco, a unique beach.

Picture this, you are sunbathing on a tranquil beach, you have your favorite book on your lap, and you suddenly feel the urge to stop reading and stare in front of you. You witness a picturesque scene of a beautiful archipelago of small islands. You identify La Graciosa, and you can somewhat see Montaña Clara… where are you?  You are at Playa del Risco.  Playa del Risco is a 500-meter beach sheltered by the spectacular Risco de Famara (cliff of Famara). It is of the most isolated and quiet beaches on the island. A fantastic place to be on your own, with a friend or two, and even a whole family! This wonderful beach is located on the coast of Yé, sheltered by the glorious Risco de Famara. Playa del Risco is only accessible by boat, or by hiking down the trail known as the Camino de Los Gracioseros (a trail that deserves a blog post in its own right). Rest assured, the (at times difficult) trail is very well worth the effort. The panoramic view of the Archipiélago Chinijo (the small isla

Playa del Paso (El Golfo hiking trail)

Picture yourself escaping to an isolated beach… imagine the sound of the waves crashing… breathing in the fresh ocean air…. the black sand touching your feet… wait what ? A black sand deserted beach where the sea roars with great force. This force brings even more beauty to this stunning place since you can gaze at the foam (created by the waves) melting with the fine black sand of the shore. Without a doubt, an image of utter perfection. Also, if you are lucky enough to do this trail at sunset, you will be able to enjoy one of the most beautiful sunsets on the island (hands down!).  Playa del Paso beach is reached by a beautiful trail, which happens to be the only one that can be done within the Timanfaya National Park, without the need to be accompanied by an accredited guide. The trail begins in the town of El Golfo (at the end of the town), there is a parking area where you can park your vehicle and prepare to move on foot along the coast of the National Park. It is an eminently vo

Cueva de La Paloma and La Quesera de Bravo

Image
La Cueva de La Paloma La Cueva de La Paloma (translates to the pigeon’s cave funny enough), is near the coast of the municipality of Haría and has been eroded over the years. In the locality of Charco del Palo (Mala), in the northeast of Lanzarote, the cave can be entered by 3 main side entrances. There is one large main entrance that leads directly to the sea. The cave is named after the pigeons that live there, which can be found on the far end of the tube where the inland entrance is located. There are also other species of birds and the sound of their chirping is quite relaxing!  The caves are essentially large volcanic tunnels caused by the eruptions of the nearby volcano La Corona which erupted approximately 21,000 years ago, coinciding with the last glacial maximum. The streams flowed in the direction of the sea, on older volcanic materials emitted by Los Helechos and La Quemada, probably in favor of some ravine bed. The caves have various forms of rock, minerals, and a lot of v

Zonzamas, Lanzarote’s ancient towns

Image
Can you imagine visiting Lanzarote before the 13th Century? Let’s rewind and go back in time together! The town of Zonzamas is an archaeological site of the pre-Hispanic culture of the Majos (the indigenous population of Lanzarote and Fuerteventura), located between the Caldera de Zonzamas and the mountain Montaña de Maneje, in the municipalities of Teguise, Arrecife and San Bartolomé.  It is a national historical-artistic and archaeological monument since April 27, 1979 and BIC since September 7, 2000.  The name Zonzamas or Sonsamas is applied to different geographical features in the area and corresponds to the king Majo of Lanzarote at the time when the Biscayan Ruiz de Avendaño visited the island around 1377, to whom the construction of this town is attributed so that the so-called "Cave or Palace of Zonzamas" would be his royal residence. The latter is documented in Le Canarien's chronicle and it is assumed that the last king of the island, Guadarfia, lived in this

El Famaraíso, Famara Beach Paradise

Image
FAMARA BEACH (Playa de Famara) Without any doubt whatsoever, Famara Beach (la Playa de Famara) is one of the most spectacular beaches on the island, based in the municipality of Teguise.  The beach begins in the small town of La Caleta de Famara and extends along the coast for several kilometers towards the picturesque slopes of the impressive cliffs of Famara (Riscos de Famara). What surprises the visitor the most when stepping on this beautiful town is that it has hardly any paved streets, it still preserves its sandy alleys and its radiant houses painted white with blue or green carpentry. The sand is a light shade of beige, clean, fine, and soft to the touch. The prevailing trade winds, coming from the north, known as the “alisios del norte” have formed large sandy dunes with sparse vegetation, including tumbleweed, at the rear, and lie near bathers while pleasantly resting in the sun. Some say that there are two versions of Famara, one at low tide and the other at high tide, but b

Los Charcones, Beautiful Natural Pools.

Image
“Los Charcones”, one of Lanzarote’s greatest treasures, are natural pools located on the south side of Lanzarote near Playa Blanca (Yaiza).  Nature in its ultimate form of perfection, the unspoiled natural pools of Los Charcones are a 10-minute drive from Playa Blanca’s Montaña Roja mountain. A wide variety of pools with various sizes, depths, and shapes brighten the eye after seeing how humans can achieve the exact opposite by passing through the nearby, unfinished, and abandoned hotel in the area.  Despite the drastic contrast, or precisely because of it, Los Charcones has everything to help you rest and enjoy reading a book, snorkeling, and having a swim, sunbathing with pleasant company, or the most private and comforting form of solitude. From spa-like pools to areas for diving, almost two kilometers from the Pechiguera lighthouse along the coast, offer a continuous trickle of extremely breathtaking natural pools.  To reach the area you must use a dirt road, and the directions to

Welcome to the Blog!

Hi there! My name is Alejandro Delgado and I am a remote worker (and local) living on the beautiful island of Lanzarote (Canary Islands, Spain). The main reason I created this blog is that I want to share some of Lanzarote's most exclusive places to visit, experiences to experience, and emotions to feel. I will start each post by talking about a place, person, or object, then I will proceed by describing what it is, how it made me feel, and how much I recommend it (which will always tend to be a lot ;) ). Thank you for joining me on this journey and I really hope you learn as much about Lanzarote as possible and fully enjoy your stay! 😀 I  hope you enjoyed this post!
